International Museum Day (IMD) is held every year on 18 May. Each year as part of IMD, M&GSQ coordinates Museums Alight!, an annual week-long celebration that “shines a light” on the collection items, contemporary art exhibitions, historical venues and stories of museums and galleries in every region of Queensland.

Museums Alight! is based around the International Council of Museums’ theme, which in 2010 is Museums and Social Harmony.
